Holcim plant in Volsk

Holcim (Rus) (before 07.04.2014 Volskcement) is not only one of the biggest plants in Russian cement industry, but also an urban element with its own history and traditions. New entrepreneurs were attracted to Volsk lands by the richest deposits of raw materials vital for cement production. In April 1896 the City Council of Volsk gave the permission to a well known St. Petersburg Company to build a small cement plant. In July 1897 the Glukhoozyorsky plant (called so at that time) went into operation and three years later local merchant Mr. Pligin financed the construction of another cement plant. Merger of two plants formed a fundament for growth and development of one of the giants of Russian construction industry.

Holcim (Rus)  has got the unique raw material deposits for production of sulfate resisting and the oil well cement.

In October 2011 the decision about investment in the sum of 350 MIO Euro has been taken by EXCO of Holcim Ltd. with purpose of reconstruction and modernization of existing plant using advanced cement production sciences, installation of the newest technological equipment, insuring a sustainable manufacturing process, increasing of product quality and being environmentally friendly.

Volsk plant modernization project includes a new production line installation with capacity 4 500 tonnes per a day. During reconstruction, “wet” technique of cement production will be replaced by a “semi-wet” one.

The new project will be implemented in the plant according to development strategy, social and ecological concept with absolute observation of environment and labour protection law and industrial safety, as well as safety assurance.

Preproject and project documentation development is planned to be finished up to 2013. Construction work will take approximately 2 year period. Taking into consideration the fact that plant reconstruction basically will be implemented with minimal down time of existing production, the project is planned to be split into stages. The beginning of building and construction works is expected in the 2d quarter of 2013; new line commissioning is expected in the 3d quarter of 2016. All the planned building and construction works will be implemented by qualified contracting designers and construction companies with necessary experience, selected on a fair competition basis.
